Fine art and giclee printing

Giclée prints are large format reproductions made from original art or photographs printed on a variety of media – watercolor paper, canvas, photographic paper, and other material. This type of art reproduction is becoming the new standard in the art industry, and is widely embraced for its quality by major museums, galleries, publishers, artists, and photographers.

Fine art and giclee printing

Giclée prints have captured the imaginations of many artists and photographers because of its exceptional quality, longevity, and flexibility of printing-on-demand. The result is breathtaking.

Giclee (pronounced zee-clay) is a French word that means a spray of liquid. A Giclee fine art print is a print made by a special printer, which sprays millions of microscopically small drops of archival inks to create art. This results in an amazingly smooth and consistent image true to the original artwork. Giclee has better color accuracy and resolution than other printing methods. A Giclee fine art print is the closest reproduction of an original artwork that is currently possible.

Giclee is becoming the new standard for top quality printing in the art world. Major museums, galleries and artists have adopted Giclee printing.

With a resolution of 2880, 8.3 million dots per square inch, (an 8x10 image has 664 million droplets) the detail and color vibrancy exceeds traditional printmaking technologies. An 8.5x11 proof is available on the selected material, by mail. After approval, Giclée prints are printed within only 3 -5 working days to be ready to pick-up or ship. The image can be sprayed with a UV protective coating on request and will last as long as any other work of art.

The digital image is archived and stored at no charge, the artist has the advantage of printing additional copies on-demand, incurring only the sq. ft. cost.

Advantages

Giclée produced prints are completely faithful to the artist’s original and they have the look and feel of an original art. The latest inks used are very stable, giving fade and color shift resistance and offer 70-150 year light-fastness and UV-resistance under museum archival condition, and 70 years under average indoor light conditions.

Giclées offer the collector the same physical properties of an original painting at a fraction of the price. Giclée prints are advantageous to artists who do not find it feasible to mass produce their work, but want to reproduce their art as needed, or on-demand.

Archived files will not deteriorate in quality as negatives and films do, so digital images can be reproduced to almost any size and onto various media, giving the artist the ability to customize prints for a specific client.

Another tremendous advantage of Giclée printing is that an artist or a photographer may have several galleries represent the same art and have the same image displayed at an art festival or special event to gain maximum exposure.

Giclée prints will exceed your greatest expectations.

Who retains the art copyrights?

You do!

Basic Pictures or I do not claim any rights to your artwork or the prints made from that artwork. Some printers believe that because they have altered or enhanced the digital file used to make the print that they have a legal claim to the digital files. Basic Pictures or I would never make such claims. We only create prints or release files with the written consent of the artist or the artist’s estate. We take all copyright laws very seriously.

Also be aware that when you sell an original work of art, you retain all printing rights. Unless you specifically state otherwise when making a sale, you keep all rights to any use of that image for reproduction purposes. The buyer cannot make prints without your consent. This also means that you do not need the buyer’s consent to sell reproductions of this image. We do, however, encourage you to notify the buyer if you plan to do this. It goes a long way to be courteous to your clients.
